We Got to Pray to Make it Today
Hey-it's Juliana. Here's an OLD video you might like about prayer. McHammer used to give us some great stuff! :-)
Tonight Mike talked about prayer. Praying seems so easy...just talk to God, right? For something that seems so simple it sure isn't. Here's some things us girls came up with tonight to help us spend quiet time with God.
-Get in a routine-maybe spend a few minutes in the morning or at night with God.
-Read your Bible when you pray.
-Listen to music that helps you pray. (Note: Death Metal does not help you pray)
-Keep a journal if you like to write. You can go back later and see how God has worked in your life.
-Open your eyes and walk around if you start to get sleepy.
-Start small. Praying for 5 minutes a day is great!
-Pray about different things. You can tell God how great he is, get stuff off your chest, tell him what you're thankful for and tell him what you need.
-Set an alarm on your cell phone or alarm clock... Mike did this in college and it really worked!
One of the best parts about prayer is listening to God when he talks back to you. I'm not talking about some big booming voice coming from the sky! It can be a sense of peace God gives you about a difficult situation, or an answer to prayer that pops into your head that wasn't there before. Sometimes God uses our friends or a conversation to speak to us. The more we talk to God the more he'll talk back to us. Try it out!

Slow Down
Matthew 14:12-21 speaks of the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000, verse 23 of the same chapter tells us of Jesus taking the time to get away and pray.
It's hard to hear God in the busyness of life.
Often we have so much going on, places to be, people to see, that we lose site of the most important thing in our lives-notice I said MOST important, our relationship with God.
If we don't slow down and get quite, we will not hear God speaking to us.
There is a story in the Bible in 1 Kings 19 that talks about a man named Elijah. I am often brought here when thinking about God and how He speaks to us, and in this story Elijah is told to stand on the Mountain and wait because God was going to pass by. All this crazy stuff happens like earthquakes and fires, but it says God was not in any of that and then a small still voice speaks to Elijah and he knows it's the voice of God.
We can't hear God if we are not going to listen.
Slowing down has to do with making time to have relationships. Every relationship that we have needs time, a lot of it. Ever had a best friend? God wants time with us too: reading the Bible, praying, and just hanging out. We need to slow down to make sure that happens.
This week I challenge you to turn off something for one hour (TV, Ipod, Computer) and give that time to relationships. Spend 15 minutes reading your Bible, spend 15 minutes praying, spend 15 minutes to really talk to your parents, and spend 15 minutes to really listen to them. Do this once a week and I guarantee your life will change!
Until next time,
Mike
